Cajun Country Food, Attraction Favs

Here is a list of some of our favorite picks from this trip. For full details and short reviews click on this link  Cajun, Fun, Food and Music.

1. Vermillionville

Take the time to visit Vermilionville a Cajun-Creole settlement reconstructed on the bayou’s banks, where costumed staff and craftspeople demonstrate activities of 18th- to 19th-century daily life and musicians jam. While it sounds like a kitschy “Cajunland” theme park, it’s actually quite a good introduction to the culture. Vermilionville – 300 Fisher Road Lafayette, LA 70508

2. Savoy Music Center

Part music store, part Cajun accordion workshop, proprietor Marc Savoy’s factory turns out about five specialty accordions a month for people around the world. On Saturday morning, accordion players and other instrumentalists head here for jam sessions and musicians from all over the area drop in. Savoy Music Center – 4413 Hwy 190-E, Eunice, LA 70535

3. Tobasco Company Tour

Touring food factories can be a hit or miss venture. I understand that sometimes you get a really hands-on tour that gets you up close and personal to the action which can be pretty fun. That was not the case on Sunday mid-morning. The plant was as you would expect idol that day. I’m here to tell you, however, that taking a tour of the Tabasco Factory and then visiting Avery Island, is absolutely worth your time. Tobasco Factory – 32 Wisteria Rd, Avery Island, LA 70513

4. The French Press

Stopped for lunch on a Sunday at 11:15 and were seated right away. We decided on the Shrimp and Avocado Salad and Chicken and Waffles. The food and service were amazing. This is a must stop in downtown Lafayette.

5. Lake Martin Rookery

Fortunately, this lake is off the beaten path and as such, it is not overrun with tourists. It is truly unspoiled beauty. I can see why this is the most Instagrammed spot in LA. You will find abundant wildlife and flora, birds, gators, snakes, and wildflowers dot the landscape. There is a picturesque spot around every corner, with moss-laden trees and lake views.

Honorable Mention

Church Of St. Johns  The Evangelist – 515 Cathedral St., Lafayette

This is a splendid Dutch Romanesque edifice done in red and white brick, with fine stained glass dating to 1916. Check out the 500-year-old live oak next door, it’s not hard to miss. St Johns Cathedral

Creole Lunch House – 713 12th St., Lafayette

Get a couple of stuffed bread and whatever’s been smothered that day (chicken thighs, pork chop, shoe, it’s all gonna be ridiculously good). Creole Lunch House

Johnson’s Boucherie – 1111 St. John St., Lafayette

The Johnson family has been smoking meats since 1937, and their brisket (and that crazy grilled cheese and boudin ball sandwich) should not be missed. https://www.johnsonsboucaniere.com

Buck and Johnny’s – 100 Berard St, Breaux Bridge, LA

Ginny and Caroline went to watch a band play on a Sunday night. They were totally surprised by the atmosphere & the great service and music. Buck and Johnnys

Pont Breaux’s Cajun Restaurant –  325 W Mills Ave, Breaux Bridge, LA

Located in a historic building and a little out of the way. Good crowd in on a Saturday night. Wonderful Cajun music from a bunch of young guys who had all us oldies on the floor. Great cajun food – gumbo, crawfish etouffee, shrimp and grits, baked potato, and delicious, lemony creme brulee Pont Breaux’s Cajun Restaurant

Pats Fishermans Wharf – 1008 Henderson Levee Rd, Henderson, LA 70517

Come see what all the excitement is about! For home-style cooking, Louisiana hospitality, and good times, just make your way to Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant in Henderson, LA. We’re a world famous, family-run, Bayou institution that has been serving up mouthwatering Cajun cooking since 1948.
