Chautauqua Lake KOA

Written By Dale Libby

I was bitten by the RV bug at a very early age. The day my dad brought home that 12′ pull behind camper my world changed. Tent camping was fine but this rig had running water, toilet, shower, beds and a small stovetop. Times have changed but my love for RVing never dieded.

Chautauqua Lake KOA offers a well-rounded camping experience with several strong points but also a few drawbacks to consider.

Pros:
– Scenic location close to Chautauqua Lake with beautiful views and natural surroundings.
– Variety of accommodations, including spacious RVs, tent sites, and cabins catering to diverse preferences.
– Family-friendly environment featuring amenities such as a heated pool, mini golf, playgrounds, hiking trails, and dog parks.
– Clean and well-maintained facilities, including restrooms and showers.
– Convenient access to popular local attractions like Chautauqua Institution and Midway State Park.
– Gated security enhances safety and peace of mind for campers.
– Friendly, helpful staff noted by many guests.

Cons:
– Wi-Fi connectivity is unreliable, which can be a drawback for those needing internet access.
– Limited lake access or lack of waterfront sites for some camping spots.
– Certain sites may feel isolated or less scenic, depending on location within the park.

Overall, Chautauqua Lake KOA is ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a clean, activity-rich campground, but may require flexibility regarding customer service and site preference

A) Site Quality: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/ 5

We have stayed at this campground many times before, and I have always liked the Deluxe patio sites K2 to K5. This time, we planned to stay for a week. Since it was one of our last trips of the season, we decided to splurge and choose a Deluxe site. Site K4 has the best view of the lake, but unfortunately, it was not available. Instead, we ended up at site K5.

Insights

  • If you have the budget for a deluxe site, K2 – K6 would be the preferred sites. If you can land K4, book it. It has the best view of the lake from the patio.
  • Budget-minded campers should aim toward Y1-Y3. These are a bit more spacious with plenty of grass. They are directly across from the playground, which may be a plus for some and not for others. X4 – X6 are also good choices for a bit more room between campers.
  • The sites, for the most part, are well graveled and relatively level. You should have no problem setting up.
  • Power, water, and sewer connections are mid-ship. We had no issues with the power pedestal, and the water pressure was good. I would highly recommend a filter. We have noticed that our filters, after a stay at this park, get a good workout.

B) Facilities: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/4

The good news is that the Bathhouse, Laundry, Playground, and dog walking area are all located in the bottom section of the park. This area is well-maintained, clean, and the laundry machines are in good working order.

However, the downside is that everything else, including the pool, office, and an additional playground, is located at the top of the property. Getting there requires a bit of a hike, so you may want to use a golf cart or your car if you want to reach the pool quickly. Otherwise, be prepared to get your steps in!

During our stay, the pool was not open. However, on a previous visit, it was open and appeared to be well cared for. The staff in the office are friendly, and the office itself is well-stocked with various items that might be useful during your stay.

C) Amenities: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/4

As mentioned earlier, the Wi-Fi during peak times at the campground can be somewhat unreliable. However, we had no issues with our cell phones and enjoyed excellent 5G coverage while we were there. For us, the bathhouse and laundry facilities are the most important amenities since we don’t spend much time at the pool. Both the bathhouse and laundry are located within a short walk in the lower section of the campground. If you have a dog, you’ll find a large dog walk conveniently situated right behind the bathhouse.

D) Location: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/5

You’re just minutes away from Chautauqua Lake and everything it has to offer. We love this location because it provides opportunities to dine near the lake in Mayville or Bemus Point. The Chautauqua Institution, known for its great concerts, is only a short drive away. There are also nearby state parks where you can hike and explore. Additionally, Jamestown features the National Comedy Center and the Lucy Desi Museum.

Wanderers Overall Rating:  ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️.5/5

Back To The Garden

Back To The Garden

Prior to jumping into RV most timing, I loved to garden. I spent a great deal of time preparing a 40′ x 4′ piece of ground getting it ready for our vegetable garden. The soil was very good to start but we amended that with a couple of years of composting that we had built up. The results were nothing but fantastic. We harvested the sweetest tomatoes, the best greens, Brussel sprouts, snap peas and beans we had ever tasted. I’m sure we all stay this about our gardens :). I loved working the soil in this patch of ground. It became a daily habit to go out and tend it.

Vegas is calling to us once again. We are packing up Natasha for this trip looking forward to getting back out on the road. This itinerary will take us to some familiar city locations with new RV parks tossed in. You might ask the question, going batty, where is that? The answer would by Carlsbad Cavern National Park. We plan to revisit this park to witness the bats leaving the cave at dusk.
