Hacienda RV Resort – Las Cruces, NM

This resort came highly recommended by a good RV friend of ours. It looked like yet another great Snowbird location at first glance. We had passed up Las Cruses to stay in Tucson on previous east or west trips on Interstate 10. Our intention this go-around was to visit Las Cruces and the surrounding area with a focus on White Sands National Monument.

This resort is located near mid-city just off Interstate 10. As we were pulling into the resort the park looked nice, sites very tidy and raked. The pull-through sites were divided into two by wooden fences or bushes. Check-in was quick and easy and off we headed to our site #146 straight down the road.

A) Site Quality: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/5 

The sites were all for the most part similar in makeup. Grey finely crushed stone, ranked and level with full hook up pedestals conveniently located midship. Your orientation on-site #146 will be nose to the NE and butt to the SW and your doorway will be facing W. The site had a wood barrier 8′ fence separating us from site #147. The park is made up of double pull-throughs with your neighbor facing the opposite direction on your driver’s side.  

Insights

• There is ample room to roll out your awning and set up seating on your site. There are no picnic tables proved with the exception of the end sites. I did like the finely raked and level sites. The set-up and leveling of the rig were a breeze. I would highly recommend an outdoor carpet or a sand mat. I found out later when it rained that the grey crush was not such a good thing. The dog and I were covered with fine grey dust every time we took a walk or stepped outside. Of course, we tracked it into the rig making Ginny very unhappy.
• This is a medium size in city RV park consisting of 113 sites. They are super rig friendly with 8 Extra Long sites that could easily hold a Prevost and trailer. Sites 189 – 213 are back in, shorter rigs, and appear to have long-term stays in them. Back in sites, 181 -188 are larger, will accommodate a 38 ft fifth wheel and back up to the dog run.
• The Pull-trough sites with the exception of the end sites are roomy and wide with ample room to park your toad or truck. The End Sites are 1 1/2 wide with a picnic table and trees for light shade. I particularly liked site 109 near the front of the property.

B) Facilities: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/5 

The main building as you enter the property serves as the clubhouse, sitting room with fireplace, laundry, bathrooms, exercise room. small convenience store and office. It is spacious and very clean and inviting. There you will also find an outdoor covered patio, garden area, and fireplace. You will be given a key card for after-hours entry into everything but the main office area.

C) Amenities: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/5 

The clubhouse as I mentioned was inviting with a lounge area, big screen tv, books, comfortable chairs, and couch. There are a number of tables and chairs for gatherings. The bathrooms are spotless, while the laundry area is small it is in very good working order. Water pressure is very high, so you will need to use a regulator.

The hot tub is a good size and does double duty, pool and spa. Cable TV is provided with a good selection of channels. If you have a satellite, there is very little obstructing your view of the sky. Wi-fi is free available and will serve you well for email and such but not streaming.

D) Location: ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️/5 

I had mentioned above this would be another option if we were into the Snowbird routine. You are conveniently located directly off I-10 and within minutes of shopping and local attractions like The Organ Mountains. There you will find great hiking and picnicking. Approximately one hour away lies the White Sands National Monument.

We drove through but did not stop and shop in Old Mesilla. There you will find some of the finest and busiest restaurants in Las Cruces. We have family in El Paso at Fort Bliss. You are about 45 min + ride from the base. We did check out a closer RV park on the NM, TX border and felt that even with the drive, this might be the best place to stay given its location and amenities. We have the family doing recon in El Paso for closer RV parks with similar amenities, not sure we are going to find better.

E) Paw – Friendliness – 🐾🐾🐾.5/5

Zoey came away mixed about this park. The dog run at the end of the resort is for a better description of a long walled pit (see photo below) that looks like it also serves as a wash when it rains. Now don’t get us wrong, it’s lighted with grass, bags, and garbage cans. I would just hate to be in it after a heavy rain, a little freaky. There are two fenced areas so you can separate the dogs a bit need be.

Walking the park is good on dry days. You can get in a solid walk in the park and down the frontage road if you need a bit further walk. The downside was the grey dust from the crushed stone in the sites. When it rained it would be picked up by vehicles and track into the streets. Walking around the park on wet streets meant Zoey a typically tan dog had grey legs and belly when we came in. Not to mention, I was tracking in all that wet dust as well.

Wanderers Take

This truly is a nice RV park with good amenities and close to several points of interest. The Organ Mountains to the North East of the park are in view from your RV. Mesilla looked very inviting with its narrow streets, adobe buildings, shops, restaurants, and parks.  They boast that the park was designed and developed by RVers, which was evident in the site orientation, condition, wide streets, and ease of getting around the park.

If you are considering this location for a winter stay you will need to book very early. The park was full when we arrived and was going to be that way for some time. Month-long stays will require you to pay for electricity along with your site fee.

Points of Interest

White Sands National Monument – Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world’s great natural wonders – the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world’s largest gypsum dune field. White Sands National Monument preserves a major portion of this unique dune field, along with the plants and animals that live here.

After checking the highway closure reports for White Sands Missle Range and finding that they were not testing. We headed up RT 70 on a rather foggy and light rain morning. I would highly recommend you check as they do close the road down for hours during testing. There is only one way in and out from Las Cruces and RT 70 is it.

The Organ mountain pass was thick with fog and honestly, we could not see 100 ft in front of us. We broke through the fog and headed down the mountain toward Whites Sands NM. The rain that came through the park kept the crowds to a minimum so we had the park pretty much to ourselves that day. The road into the park is partially paved and the rest was packed gypsum.

Once you are in the park and massive gypsum dunes it’s like being in a northern winter wonderland. For miles, all you can see are the white dunes. Bring a saucer (sled) with you to the park. You will be able to slide down the many dunes. Bring your lunch along as there were picnic shelters scattered about with seating and shade.  MAP
