The flip-top design of our RV dresser has been a persistent source of irritation ever since we made the purchase. What initially seemed like a clever innovation has, in reality, fallen disappointingly short of our expectations. Gaining access to the space beneath the top requires a tedious process of clearing off everything from the dresser’s surface, which is anything but convenient.

Let me clarify that I am not a professional cabinet maker; this project was assembled using my basic skills and a bit of creativity. Removing the hinged dresser top was surprisingly straightforward. Once it was off, I needed to install a 12″x 2″ x 1 3/4″ block on each side of the opening to properly support the soft-close side mount drawer slides. I opted for side mounts to optimize the limited space available for this renovation.

The blocks were crafted from 2″x 4″ lumber and stained to perfectly match the dresser’s finish. I secured them to the inner sides of the dresser using sturdy wood screws. The drawer slides fit seamlessly over these blocks, but attaching them to the composite top required drilling pilot holes and using wood screws. The material used for the top is exceptionally dense, necessitating some effort to drill through.

Now, the top rests on 1/2″ soft-close slides, which unfortunately created a visible gap around the dresser’s perimeter. To remedy this, I added a 1/2″ piece of pine along the front and rear edge, stained to match the dresser, and secured it in place with a nail gun and 1″ finish nails. To further enhance the appearance, I applied a strip of black tape over the side of the slide rail, making it less noticeable.

Step 1

Begin by carefully removing the existing shower doors and hardware, ensuring that you do not damage the surrounding surfaces. This will go more easily with an extra set of hands to help with moving. Carefully clean all surfaces of existing clanking.

Step 2

Measure wall to wall, both top and bottom, to make sure they are equal (1/4″ difference per side is allowed). If more than 1/4″, attach double-sided foam tape behind the part of the shower screen frame to adjust.

Observations

The hardest part of this installation will be removing the previous caulking. Invest in a good plastic scraper, GOO Gone, and denatured alcohol. Once you have a clean surface, patch all existing exposed screw holes with tube and tile indoor caulking. I would suggest that you replace the rounded wood screws holding the shower stall in place with similar-sized flat-head screws. This will allow the placeholder foam double-back tape to better adhere.

I felt the canister side of the unit needed additional tape. The 3/4 inch foam tape, in my opinion, was not adequate. I stripped the existing foam tape and applied two rows of Gorilla Mounting Tape to the back of the canister. To further improve contact, I notched out the tape where it met the screws.
